Historically, Rugby League competitions in Brisbane were managed by two incorporated sporting associations. In November 2017, Greater Brisbane Junior Rugby League (GBJRL) clubs and Brisbane Second Division Rugby League (BSDRL) clubs voted overwhelmingly to amalgamate as Rugby League Brisbane and accept the Governance Principles developed by The Australia Sports Commissions (ASC). The subsequent incorporation of Rugby League Brisbane Limited in June 2018 has resulted in stronger corporate governance and financial accountability over the organisation and its member clubs.
Today, Rugby League Brisbane manages the largest combined Rugby League competition in the world with approximately 16,000 player registration (12,500 juniors and 3,500 seniors) across 56 clubs, who field 891 teams in 101 competitions, playing over 450 games each week. The organisation support community-based Rugby League Clubs across the Greater Brisbane Region and manages competitions for junior boys and girls, senior men and women, as well as A-Grade and over 35 Masters for men and women. In addition to these competitions the organisation also manages the Chairman’s Challenge (Ted Beaumont Trophy) for senior players and the annual inter-zone challenge for U13 and U14 boys.
Rugby League Brisbane works closely with the Queensland Rugby League to promote the game to prospective players and deliver game development programs that strengthen the skills and engagement of players across Brisbane clubs. Rugby League Brisbane also invests in the community by supporting a range of initiatives and events throughout the year. It supports organisations to raise awareness and improves disability access to Rugby League and other sports and recreation activities. It connects business sponsors to the game and celebrates the achievements of players, coaches and officials, as well as the valuable contribution of volunteers. It guides community Rugby League clubs towards success and enables Brisbane’s Rugby League community to grow and flourish.
